Located in Xinlong County,Sichuan Province,Xiwalateng Monastery is staying along the mountains and a river. It is a imposing temple with a very long history and romaunts. Xiwa means "108 Deidy" while Lateng means "melts into". The story goes that Beinuozhana, Guru Rinpoche's best student, built up more than ten small temples in Xinlong area around one thousand years before. And then Zhimeijunxiong, the great mahasiddha from Gatuo Monastery visited here afterwards. One day, Zhimeijunxiong witnessed by himself that the 108 deities mentioned in the "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" appeared in the clear blue sky, then turned into a colorful rainbow and melted into this place immediately. He thus confirmed that this place is a sacred land. Guru Zhimeijunxiong then united the previous around ten temples into a monastery named Xiwalateng, which is the biggest one locally. Other than that, he restored Gatuo Monastery, built up pagoda and Buddhist mural paintings and transcribed several parts of Tripitaka using gold powder, started the tradition of the dhama ceremony on 10th every month. The first Zhimeijunxiong's great religious achievements were witnesed by the people at the time. These includes fingerprints on the stone, rainbow net and fragrant flower rains appeared while visualizing sacred bottle. Zhimeijunxiong, the pureland protector generation by generation, is the main supporter for Gatuo tradition. Nowadays the 5th Zhimeijunxiong's religious achievements spread all around Tibet and India.
Xiwalateng Monastery was very famous at that time with a lot of disciples and sponsors. The King of the place, Guomonuojia, who was a devouted Buddhist, assigned his beloved son to live there. Further more, he wanted to loot the Juewo Buddha statue(the actual Buddha size staue)from Jokhang Temple to Xiwalateng temple to worship it. But he finally failed due to some reasons. Because Xiwalateng temple has been always in the leading place in terms of teaching, learning and practising ,each year seven monks are sent by the surrounding 60 temples to study there for one year. One day, the King invited Guru Baimadengdeng to visit and preside a great ceremony. Guru said that I will arrive before daybreak. Towards dawn,Guru approached, walking like flying. When he got close the big river side in front of the temple, he hesitated because there was no bridge there. Just at that moment, a long bridge arised from the river to help Guru passing through. After Guru got across the river, the bridge sinked slowy back down into the river.Until now, we can still see the shadow of the bridge in the river,on and off.
Guru Maimadengdeng often visited the temple to worship,to teach and to practise. One time, when Guru was presiding a Ganlu Pill making procedure in the Small Hall of the temple, the king said, if these Ganlu Pills are useless, I will mix them with the poison and feed the people to kill them. But if it works out, wish it fly and spread everywhere. As soon as he finished the
words, these Ganlu Pills jumped up and spreaded everywhere. And the small hall that can only hold two hundred people immediately enlarged to the capacity of accommodate more than one thousand people. All the people on the scene, no matter maids or chefs, got seven Ganlu Pills. The King was so impressive that he felt guilty for his bad manner. He vowed and promised to built up a two story high Juewo Buddha Statue and invited around ten mahasiddha from other temples to show their supernatural power. His requirement is:everyone donating a valuable thing to fill up the bottom of the Buddha Staute without any preparation. Guru Baibadengdeng took a scented stick from the air and made a very beautiful lucky knot by it. Another mahasiddha created a shining Dorje knot using a bronze sword on the desk. One fetched a right spin conch from the air, while another switched a rider statue's head to a opposite direction. The masterpieces of those mahasiddhas were preserved in the temple, but they were destroyed during the cultural revolution afterwards. Only two things,Lucky knot and Dorje knot are still preserved there safe and sound.
